CATERPILLAR HOLT T-35 2-TON TRACTOR
Holt's Contributions to Caterpillar: Holt T-35/2-Ton
Holt's T-35 was developed before the consolidation under the leadership of Harmon Eberhard.
Thomas Baxter replaced Benjamin Holt as president and turned the company towards
building smaller tractors, which he saw as the future for farming, logging and construction.
The T-35 designation was soon changed to 2-Ton to be in line with Holt nomenclature.
The 2-Ton featured a unique overhead-camshaft, four-cylinder gas engine.
The 4.00x5.00-inch (100x125-mm) engine displaced 251 ci (4,111 cc).
Rated engine speed was 1,000 rpm. The transmission offered one reverse
and three forward speeds. A unique feature of this tractor was that the transmission
was located behind the rear axle, rather than in front, as was usual.
Oil-cooled sterring clutches were used, at least at first. Cast track links were also used.
Holt, and later Caterpillar, made all components of the tractor,
except for the Eisemann magneto and Kingston carburetor.
In working trim, the tractor weighed 4,000 pounds (1,800 kg), hence the designation "2-Ton."
Tractors, like people, tend to gain weight as they get older, and the 2-Ton was more of a
2.5-ton (2,250-kg) machine by the end of its production life. The maximum drawbar pull was
3,275 pounds (1,474 kg).
The 2-Ton was promoted as a compact unit for earthmoving and agriculture.
Originally expected to be a 35-hp tractor, it was actually rated at 15 drawbar and 25 belt hp.
It was the smaller tractor in the product line through most of the 1920s.
The 2-Ton was built first by Holt and then by Caterpillar, staying in production from 1921 to 1928.
